    Job Summary and Qualifications

    The Coding Supervisor reviews the medical records to select the appropriate diagnosis and procedure codes, sequencing and assigning from the most current version of ICD-CM and HCPCS CPT coding applications. Applies all appropriate coding guidelines and criteria for code selections. Adheres to HCA-OSG Coding Policies and Procedures for the assignment of complete, accurate, timely and consistent codes for diagnoses and procedures.

    What you will do in this role:

    • Works with coding team to improve the accuracy, integrity and quality of patient data to ensure minimal variations in coding practices and improve the quality of physician documentation with the body of the medical records to support code assignment.

    • Monitors and assesses performance of coding staff to assure timely, accurate coding of the patient records.

    • Serve as mentor for complex case coding.

    • Codes outpatient surgery center records, including the assignment of most current version of ICD-CM, E/M, Procedure Categories, modifiers (when applicable) and HCPCS/CPT procedure codes.

    • Codes billing supplies and implants and furnishes completed coding information as necessary to bill cases.

    • Addresses performance issues and applies corrective action or discipline when needed.

    • Serves as coach and positive role model for staff and colleagues establishing/maintaining a work environment that fosters positive morale.

    • Resolves/clarifies codes and diagnoses with conflicting, missing or unclear information by appropriately utilizing the query tool to get additional information from the Medical Staff, as necessary.

    • Supervises coders including approving Kronos and PTO.

    • Ensures coders maintain CEUs.

    • Manages the coding functions consistent with medical, legal and ethical requirements.

    • Assists Business Office Manager(s) on special projects relating to coding issues or questions to include medical records audits and other coding and HIM support, as appropriate.

    • Collects data and prepares reports of findings.

    • Assists with preparation for AAAHC and/or state reviews.

    • Shares knowledge of the reporting and disposition of medical records (statistical reports).

    • Shares the information to follow the state standards related to the release of information from medical records and determines the appropriate release of medical information.

    • Provides input to Business Office Manager(s) for evaluating the quality of patient care and assists others as needed for an effective and efficient operation

    • Initiates physician queries where appropriate.

    • Reviews all appropriate coding resources in order to remain current with knowledge.

    • Utilizes the complete medical records documentation in code assignment.

    Qualifications you will need:

    • One year of college or business courses.

    • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) college degree, preferred

    • Completed coursework in Human Anatomy & Physiology, medical terminology, introduction to coding (including ICD-9 and CPT), preferred

    • Minimum two years of experience in outpatient coding and/or Health Information Management required

    • Minimum one year of experience in a medical office setting (i.e. ambulatory surgery center, hospital, or doctor's office) highly preferred

    • Lead or supervisory experience preferred

    • Coding certification from AAPC, AHIMA preferred

    • BCLS may be required as per facility standard
