  • Mechanical Design Engineer, Senior

    The Design Engineer leads the development work, problem resolution and design of new automotive shift selector products and their related component technologies and processes. This position will work directly with other engineers and cross functional teams to develop various user interface shift selectors as the truck and electric vehicle markets continue to evolve. There is access to an in-house industrial designer to generate new product ideas and concepts as needed. Concepts can be prototyped by technicians in our prototype shop with many processes including, SLA rapid prototyping, 5-axis machining, injection molding, EDM, metal forming, etc. This position will also interface directly with our India and China engineering teams providing guidance on engineering analysis and technical process. The development work performed by the Design Engineer will help to expand into new areas and products in the commercial truck/bus, construction, agriculture, sports and recreation, and off-highway markets. Though not a supervisory position, the Design Engineer will provide engineering assistance and consultation to other engineers and departments on technical matters.

    Your Challenge:

    • Performs on-going conceptual and detailed design, design review and engineering analysis in support of New Product Introduction (NPI) projects

    • Ensures all objectives regarding aesthetics, functionality, specifications, and manufacturability are met

    • Oversees the use of appropriate modeling and concept visualization techniques in keeping with data and client evaluations

    • Participates in customer meetings recommending design approaches and solutions to technical problems affecting the customer and consults on critical issues

    • Interfaces directly with customer engineering in the design of new components and assemblies. When appropriate and as requested, works closely with clients to create new math models of shifters

    • Responsible for supporting all technical based process on projects such as: Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP), Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA), Process Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (PFMEA) reviews, TS 16949 and US Government Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS)

    • Prepares and delivers detailed engineering specifications and data regarding product testing and release to the Manufacturing Department, using 3D design

    • Coordinates with the Manufacturing Department to resolve assembly, design, and measurement/ specification issues

    • Analyzes final design with various plastics and metals for stress using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to ensure that the product meets customer specifications, making proper adjustment/ changes to design when appropriate

    • Ensures that engineering support of new products meet quality, governmental and customer specifications and is current with industry best practice; documenting all quality reviews, tests, and prototypes

    What You Bring

    • Customer-focus mindset with strong interpersonal skills, written and oral communication skills

    • Experience with any of the following design tools: SolidWorks, SolidWorks FEA, Oracle Agile PLM, Infor CSI (ERP system), etc.

    • Superior planning and organization skills; ability to operate under pressure and meet deadlines

    • Proficiency in Microsoft products: Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, MS Project

    • Highly motivated with the ability to work independently

    • Proven track record of not just designing, but assembling prototypes, performing tests, writing reports, etc.

    • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field

    • Minimum of 5 years' product development or project leadership experience from concept to realization

    • Experience in designing products with integrated electromechanical design of switches, lighting technology, displays, connectors, cables, etc.

    • Experience with designing a variety of manufactured parts including injection molded plastic, sheet metal, diecast, machined, etc.

    • Experience with dynamic parts including gears, levers, motors, bearings, springs, etc.

    • Understanding of tribology (wear, lubrication, friction, etc.) and selection of materials and plating

    • Experience with tolerance analysis

    • Experience with stress analysis including FEA

    • Experience with thermal analysis

    • Preferred industries of automotive, power tools, or healthcare

    • Ability to work and interface directly with customers on a consistent basis

    • Knowledge of Kaizen and Lean Manufacturing techniques in the automobile or commercial vehicle industry, preferred

    • Prior project management experience is desired

    • Knowledge of Quality Systems a plus (e.g. TS 16949, ISO9001, AS9100, etc.)
