    Responsibilities

    We currently have an opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer at our Torrance, California location. Work will be in support of production, development and continuous improvement efforts for TWTs, Electronic Power Conditioners (EPCs) and Microwave Power Modules (MPMs) built at EDD and used in a variety of commercial and military systems for communications, radar and electronic warfare.

    General categories of work will involve 3D CAD, design engineering, drafting, thermal analysis, thermoelectric analysis, structural analysis, fatigue analysis, radiation dose analysis, and environmental testing support.

    Your work will involve interfacing with engineers of various backgrounds, manufacturing personnel, program management and business development, with your valuable expertise contributing to issues at the customer level all the way down to specific details of a design or sub process. You will also act as a key member of failure investigation teams, developing and performing testing used to determine sensitivity, root cause, and validating corrective action.

    • Perform thermal and structural analyses (i.e. analytical methods, finite element analysis (FEA), computational fluid dynamics (CFD), etc.) to gain insight and improve both existing and developing products

    • Observe, evaluate and troubleshoot existing production problems; implement design improvements

    • Support environmental testing of hardware including thermal tests, vibration, and shock testing

    • Troubleshooting, test equipment support, report writing, test data review

    • CAD design and drafting of development or updated assemblies and tooling

    • Design/conduct experiments and perform verification testing to ensure efficacy of proposed solutions

    • Work as a key member of a multidisciplinary engineering team to develop new products that meet or exceed performance, cost, and schedule metrics

    • Support bid and proposal activities, including analyzing customer specifications to evaluate feasibility and cost

    • Anticipate and translate customer needs into engineering metrics

    • Present mechanical design and analysis results during internal and customer design reviews

    • Specify components and/or direct modification of products to ensure conformance with engineering design and performance specifications

    • Confer with engineering peers, operations personnel, and program management to implement operating procedures, troubleshoot non-conforming products, and provide technical information

    • Develop new manufacturing processes as needed using internal and external resources and capabilities

    • Communicate effectively with vendors, customers, and other company personnel

    • May perform some project engineer responsibilities

    Qualifications

    • A minimum of 2 years of relevant engineering experience

    • B.S. degree (M.S. preferred) in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline

    • Demonstrated proficiency with 3D CAD software (Pro/E and/or SolidWorks preferred) and manufacturing methods to generate product concepts

    • Experience with computer-based simulation and analysis tools (e.g. Ansys, Mechanica, SolidWorks Simulation, etc.)

    • Proficiency using Microsoft Office applications

    • Working knowledge of high-mix, low-volume manufacturing processing (e.g. CNC machining, sheet metal forming, investment and sand casting, 3D printing, etc.)

    • Understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing per ASME Y14.5

    • Familiarity with basic metrology equipment (e.g. calipers, micrometers, etc.), thermocouples, accelerometers, strain gages, electronic equipment (e.g. multi-meter, oscilloscope, etc.)

    • Experience in interpreting customer specifications into test requirement and comparing against test data

    • Effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary

    • Must be able to work well in a team environment and with individuals from a variety of areas within the company (such as program managers, engineers from multiple disciplines, business development staff, senior management, and manufacturing and test personnel) and also with customers and vendors

    • A hands-on, energetic approach to the role

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Knowledge of the design, manufacturing or testing of RF and/or vacuum technologies is a plus

    • Ability to do custom scripting and/or programming to automate jobs is a big plus

    • Experience with manufacturing a plus, specifically in the fields of dispenser cathodes, vacuum hardware, brazing, RF systems and general mechanical packaging.

    • Understanding of lean manufacturing and continuous improvement principles a plus

    • Experience with design reviews and/or root cause analysis efforts is a plus

    • Experience with RF system and/or microwave amplifiers is a plus

    • Experience presenting to internal and/or external customers being a plus
