  • Overview

    Performs a variety of functions to ensure compliance with New Hampshire Rules for Control of Radiation (NHRCR). Assumes responsibility for the development and enforcement of radiation safety policy and procedures.

    Responsibilities

    • Assumes responsibility for maintaining documentation of all activities as required by the NHRCR.

    • Acts as a member of the DHMC Safety Committee and the Radiation Safety Committee. Apprises both the Safety Committee and the Radiation Safety Committee of actions of mutual interest.

    • Coordinates, plans, and reviews radiation disaster and decontamination drills. Regularly reviews radiation disaster and decontamination procedures.

    • Serves as Laser Safety Officer (LSO) and acts as a member of the Laser Safety Committee.

    • Develops and implements a laser safety program in accordance with regulatory requirements.

    • Maintains an inventory of radiation producing machines at D-H and keeps the registration of such machines current with the Bureau of Radiological Health.

    • Performs shielding calculations for areas where radiation producing machines will be used.

    • Performs radiation surveys to verify shielding calculations once a radiation-producing machine is installed.

    • Verifies that regular calibration and characterization of radiation producing machines are performed at intervals specified by the NHRCR.

    • Verifies that all persons using, repairing, or maintaining radiation-producing machines have proper training in the safe use of the machines and are knowledgeable in such use.

    • Provides training to persons using radiation-producing machines to instruct such persons in the safe use of machines and to the associated health risks of exposure to radiation. Proper use of personal monitoring devices will be reviewed. Instruction will include a review of the D-H quality management program.

    • Investigates overexposure, accidents, spills, losses, thefts, unauthorized receipts, uses, transfers, disposal, misadministration, and other deviations from approved radiation safety practice and implements corrective actions.

    • Implements and enforces written policies and procedures.

    • Approves or disapproves radiation safety program changes with the advice and consent of management prior to submittal to the DHHS/BRH for licensing action, or for medical use cited at a medical institution, assists the Radiation Safety Committee in the performance of its duties.

    • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

    Qualifications

    • Master’s degree and 5 years of experience required.

    • Must possess appropriate certification in health physics or radiation safety, with a minimum of one year of experience as a full time radiation safety officer in a medical environment.

    • Other board certification may be accepted.
