    TITLE: Regional Colleague Safety Director

    POSITION SUMMARY

    The Director, Colleague Safety is responsible for directing the implementation of the Trinity Health Colleague Safety Curriculum and the facility's colleague safety activities in both the inpatient and outpatient settings for the THNY region (SJH and SPHP). Responsible for the strategic and day-to-day operational leadership for the colleague safety program. Collaborates with HR, Patient Safety/Clinical Risk, EHO, Colleague relations, Facilities, and Infection Prevention leaders and other RHM leaders to ensure the occupational initiatives, services and local programs align with TH and region-wide objectives. Has knowledge of, and is familiar with OSHA reportable events and investigations, the facility's worker's compensation programs, leave of absence policies and Americans with Disabilities Act accommodation process ensuring compliance with applicable local, state, and federal laws.

    EDUCATION, TRAINING, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE:

    • Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree or higher in health care related field preferred.

    • Experience in healthcare quality assurance and patient or colleague safety or other health law or employment practices experience.

    • Ideally, the candidate will have 3-5 years' experience in risk management, colleague safety or workplace investigations, injury case management and/or OSHA recordkeeping.

    • RN preferred.

    • Certified CPPS or equivalent preferred. Required within 2 years of hire.

    • Certified CPI trainer within one year of hire.

    SPECIAL EQUIPMENT, SKILLS, OR OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Strong written and oral communication skills, strong interpersonal, motivational and conflict resolution skills. Broad-based knowledge of OSHA and other hospital related regulatory compliance requirements. Presentation skills, team player, negotiation/ crucial conversations skills and ability to influence change without direct authority. Understanding of tools and techniques used to identify system or process failures that contribute to colleague safety issues. Familiarity with tools such as Failure Mode and Effect Analysis, Root Cause Analysis, Apparent Cause Analysis, and Learning From Defects desired. Possesses the ability to accept and drive change; ability to influence organizational culture. Ability to work with diverse groups and settings, levels of colleagues, and with varied complexities. Demonstrated adaptability and flexibility. Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations related to occupational safety (OSHA) and of accrediting/certifying agencies such as The Joint Commission, CMS, and ODH desired. Knowledge of claims and reduction strategies desired. Ability to travel to multiple sites.

    Responsibilities:

    • The Director, Colleague Safety collaborates with system office CSRM and regional leadership to develop short-term and long-range key performance indicators and goals and objectives regarding colleague safety and occupational exposures.

    • Collaborates with THNY legal counsel and Trinity Health IRMS colleagues to support investigation & defense of claims against THNY.

    • Provides ongoing education to the organization on safety science and foundations of safety behaviors to ensure safety is fully integrated into organizational systems, tools, and practices (e.g., Trinity Health Leadership System, Communication, Education, Onboarding.)

    • Facilitates and supports colleague safety initiatives committees with clinical committee chairs. Provides guidance and recommendations regarding accident and illness prevention strategies, including but not limited to safe patient handling, sharps/exposures, workplace violence, slip, trip and falls and ergonomics.

    • Responsible for maintaining or exceeding assigned metrics to included Gatekeeping incidents in electronic reporting system within 24 hours, with on-call coverage as needed.

    • Supports maintenance of OSHA log and other tracking and trending for Worker's Compensation program.

    • Supports the CSS Investigation of colleague harm events and Employee Health leads to achieve consistent and mature safety systems and develop action plans (e.g., debriefing, cause analysis, event classification, disclosure, safety alerts, learning and improvement; Manage colleague blood and body fluid exposure incident investigation & reporting).

    • Reviews and analyzes workers' compensation claim and litigation experience and prepares reports for Clinical, Department, and Sr. Leadership staff identifying trends. Collaborates with Leadership in developing changed processes/ other loss reduction/ prevention strategies to improve care.

    • Directs the reporting and management of worker's compensation claims and evaluates the extent and elements of exposure recommending appropriate actions for risk mitigation.

    • Facilitates SPHP/SJH risk reduction/ safety initiatives (i.e., THEIRS, Midas, SSE/SEC Zero Harm, TogetherSafe).

    • Oversees completion of THEIR reports and post incident investigation forms.

    • Monitors reserves and assists Worker's compensation claims managers in claim settlements and reserve adjustments and identifying and investigating claims for possible fraud, subrogation, contribution, recovery, controversion and case management as needed.

    • Develops new Colleague safety initiatives, campaigns, and other duties and projects as directed.

    • All other duties as assigned.

    Pay Range: $ 50.85 - $76.30

    Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
