    What you'll do

    We're looking for a Robotics Engineer, Controls to join the Technology Research and Development team. The Robotics Engineer, Controls focuses on Control systems and creates innovative solutions to problems by using mathematical modeling, engineering principals, Automation/Robotics principles, computer programming, or other advanced analytical skills. This position acquires team resources and coordinates team efforts in order to deliver results on projects/processes that are part of the strategic plan for ArcBest and its subsidiaries. The Robotics Engineer, Controls also provides clear and concise project definition, scope, action plans, and communication as well as develops solutions designed to meet project goals while ensuring quality throughout processes.

    Your contribution may include

    • Design and implement classical or modern control approaches and architectures for our autonomous mobile robots including filtering/estimation, optimization/model predictive control, and simulation.

    • Design and implement path following algorithms that are both kinematically and dynamically feasibly for our autonomous mobile robots.

    • Perform on-machine development activities such as control system tuning and software verification, to meet machine-level performance and feature design targets.

    • Utilize model-based development tools, such as MATLAB/Simulink to perform controls system algorithm tuning/tweaking.

    • Utilize open-source tools like CasADi to implement model-based control algorithms on C++ and other open-source frameworks like ROS and ROS2.

    • Strong analytical thinking and understanding to implement algorithms from research papers, other open-sources, and in-house libraries.

    • Participate in model creation to develop a digital twin of our robots in a physics-based simulation environment.

    • Write and maintain robust, reliable, optimized, production-ready, fault-tolerant, and/or fail-safe control software that meets requirements within real-world and real-time constraints using software engineering standard methodologies (meticulous code review, unit testing, etc.).

    • Participate in hands-on bring-up, prototyping, testing, and debugging of control algorithms, and systems.

    • Design, implement, and use a data visualization, metrics, test harness, and triage system to identify, analyze, understand root cause, and evaluate performance limitations of the robots.

    • Support existing software.

    • Support ArcBest and its subsidiaries on technical and strategic initiatives.

    • Direct and manage project development from beginning to end, not to exclude full risk assessment and recommendations for adjustment of priorities as needed.

    • Serve as technical support for advanced automation systems.

    • Perform research into innovative design, operation, and performance of the systems and/or processes.

    • Meet and communicate with Senior Leadership and external customers to provide updates, seek direction, give presentations, communicate success barriers, and showcase project results.

    • Work in a team setting to accomplish department goals.

    • Other duties and projects, as assigned.

    As a Robotics Engineer, Controls, you will be a member of the ArcBest Technologies Research and Development team in Fort Smith, AR. Your hours will be Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm, with irregular hours that may occur depending on workload.

    Education: MS or Ph.D. in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Electrical, Aerospace, Computer Engineering, Robotics, Computer Science (or equivalent experience).

    Experience: Prior experience with Robotics or Autonomous Vehicle software development experience.

    Computer Skills: Strong programming skills, preferred. Strong systems analysis and design skills.

    Other Requirements: Sensor data filtering. Classical controls - PID tuning/tweaking. Modern Controls - Full-State feedback, State Estimators, LQR etc. Software design practices- unit testing, validations, etc. Strong understanding of implementing algorithms highlighted in research papers and other open-source as well as in-house libraries.
