  • RESPONSIBILITIES

    I. JOB SUMMARY/RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Serves as a canine handler at The Queen's Medical Center - West Oahu (QMC-WO). Patrols the buildings and grounds of QMC-WO as well as the outlying properties with an assigned canine to provide a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, employees, medical staff and the protection to property.

    • Responsible for care and maintenance of the canine, including cleanliness and upkeep of the canine kennel and completion of required training.

    • Greets, assists and provides service to patients, visitors and staff in a friendly and professional manner.

    • Performs duties relative to accomplishing the QMC Emergency Preparedness function.

    II. TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    • Essential: standing, sitting, walking/running, riding of a bicycle, stooping/bending, climbing stairs, hills, over obstacles, twisting body, seeing, hearing, speaking, lifting up to 150 pounds, carrying up to 120 pounds, pushing/pulling usual weight of 20 pounds up to 50 pounds of force, wearing weight up to 75 pounds of self contained breathing apparatus equipment for decontamination response and medivacs.

    • Continuous: finger dexterity.

    • Frequent: walking on uneven ground, squatting, reaching above, at and below shoulder level, repetitive arm/hand motions, static gripping of an object for prolonged periods, frequent gripping of an object.

    • Occasional: kneeling, crawling.

    • Operates computer, typewriter, telephone, copier, CCTV, 2-way radios and various types of vehicles, SCBA equipment.

    III. TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

    • Not substantially subjected to adverse environmental conditions.

    • Exposure to body fluids, blood products, and communicable diseases.

    • Work environment may be highly stressful, fast paced, and hectic.

    • Exposed to electrical hazards, fire hazards and unsafe conditions and may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, hazardous chemicals and materials, intense heat, extreme cold, natural and manmade disasters and hazards associated with working in and near traffic.

    • The noise level in the work environment varies from moderate to extreme.

    • Work involves providing 24/7 care for the canine, including transporting and caring for the canine in the home.

    IV. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    A. EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE:

    • High school or GED required. Post secondary coursework or college degree preferred.

    • Successful completion of the American Working Dog (AWD) Canine Training Handler's Course for Detection and Patrol.

    • Current State of Hawaii Guard Registration card.

    • Valid U.S. driver's license required in accordance with Hawaii state law rules and regulations.

    • Driver's abstract or evidence of good driving record.

    • Meets and complies with qualifications set forth in QMC Fleet Safety Policy.

    • Current certification in CPR at BLS-HCP level.

    B. EXPERIENCE:

    • Two (2) years experience in law enforcement, firefighting, or security, preferably in a comparable organization.

    • Experience to demonstrate the following:

    o Ability to speak, read, write and understand English both orally and in writing and the ability to effectively communicate ideas, thoughts, and concerns.

    o Ability to write accurate and complete reports.

    • Prior dog handling experience with law enforcement, federal, or private organization in detection and patrol preferred.
