Stay Focused on the Positive During Your Job Search

Posted by

It happens to us all during a job search. Two, three or four disappointments or catastrophes happen in succession and it's as if a switch has been thrown. Your life takes on a dim, sullen outlook. Your attitude gets sour. Your spouse or significant other or your friends (if you still have any) find you to be argumentative and uncooperative. You feel an uneasy sense of discontent and frustration. It's as if you are mired down in a bog of quicksand consisting of hopelessness and self-defeating thoughts.

These don't have to be life threatening or tragic occurrences, but simply a string of minor defeats or setbacks within a certain period of time. Once they do occur, little voices enter into your mind whispering phrases like, "What's the use?" or, "I'm going no place." or "It's hopeless!" You start to question your very existence here on Planet Earth. You can't seem to tap the kind of energy that will help you break free of this vicious downward spiral of negative energy.

Some people liken this mental predicament to be like a thick, misty fog that prevents them from seeing the other alternatives that are present but camouflaged. They lack the self-motivation to move beyond the dark, psychological mist that has them trapped.

When you find yourself in this destructive, analytical abyss, remember the words by the late Thomas Morton, "Push on keep moving." This directive can serve as the tinder that ignites your desire to break out of the blue mood you are in.

Much to our dismay, there is no “Lone Ranger” who will come to save us. But there are “Tonto's” out there. What I mean is that there are people who will help us get into action and take responsibility to create the solutions we need to create a fulfilling life.

Just as a negative chain reaction occurred that put you into this undesirable mental state, you must take responsibility to create a similar chain reaction composed of positive experiences that will set you free. They do not have to be earth-shattering, life-altering activities. Simply a series of small steps to help you get to higher and firmer ground will do.

Of course, the best form of cure is prevention. Carrying out these recommended activities on a regular basis helps prevent negative thought patterns and habits from occurring in the first place.

Build up your tool chest so that together, your mind and spirit can soar to great heights. Consistently take charge of your own attitude. Develop the habit of responding to, and not reacting to, the little surprises life has to offer you each day. By having a positive mindset, you will be a more capable captain of your own ship. You will more easily sail to the sunny ports of destiny your life has to offer. By using this approach, you will create a plan to help you have a successful job search!
