Why Job Seekers Should Give Thanks

When job seekers should give thanks.

The holiday season is here and with it comes turkey, football and giving thanks. At this time of the year, it's important to remember that gratitude isn't something that is seasonal. In fact, saying thanks is a very important part of any job search.

Here are four times when saying thank you is crucial:

Immediately after an interview – It's a good idea to keep some blank thank you cards, along with stamped envelopes in your bag. This way, you can send a thank you note right after your interview and not risk forgetting crucial information by waiting until later. Although a thank you email is often appropriate, an actual hand-written thank you note is more impressive.

After meeting someone at a networking event – If you network with someone and they invite you to give them your information or offer to help you in any way, send them a thank you note along with your contact information. This is also a good way to reconnect with them so that they don't forget who you are.

Return the favor – When someone offers you help in your job search, be sure to return the favor to show your gratitude. For example, if someone gives you a referral or invites you to a networking opportunity, look for ways to help them with their career goals.

Appreciate your network – Especially if someone goes above and beyond to assist you in your search, be sure to send them a thank you note. If their help got you the job, it might even be appropriate to send a small plant or dessert as well. Of course, you wouldn't want to go overboard here, but showing your thanks gives you the reputation of being a professional.

What do you do to show your gratitude? Please share your thoughts in the comments.
