    The University of Colorado | Anschutz Medical Campus is currently seeking applications for an open-rank Community Practice Medical Assistant. This full-time, University Staff (unclassified) position in the School of Medicine Dean's Office, Community Practice Division and will be responsible for assisting physicians and nurses (if applicable) in the Vascular Clinic by setting up the patient rooms; clearing and preparing rooms; cleaning equipment; providing basic patient monitoring, education and counseling; obtaining vitals; conducting blood draws; assisting during procedures; triaging patients with guidance from the M.D., performing specimen analyses; answering phones, scheduling patients; checking in patients; collecting copays; registering patients; checking messages on phone queues; documenting patient visits and calls in the electronic health record system, and returning calls to patients. This position may require some weekend coverage. This position may be filled as a Community Medicine Medical Assistant Entry-Senior level, depending on the successful candidate's education, experience, and suitability for the position.

    This position will now function with more independence with decision making with the other medical assistants in assigning coverage each day for the physicians, ultrasonographer (if applicable).

    This position will follow established work procedures and will operate within standard guidelines when setting up rooms, clearing and preparing equipment for procedures and running labs. This position is responsible for operating independently when assisting physicians and nurses (if applicable) with medical procedures.

    Examples of Work Performed:

    Community Practice MA Entry Level:

    • Prepare exam rooms for procedures and exams including setting up sterile and non-sterile procedure trays and setting up the exam table.

    • Assist physicians during exams and procedures, including basic patient monitoring (e.g., blood pressure, pulse, etc.) and handling non-sterile supplies.

    • Clean exam rooms and ultrasound rooms after exams and procedures, including disposal of non-hazardous materials (patient drapes, etc.).

    • Performs blood draws, uranalysis, and other labs, as needed.

    • Assisting with chart set-up, equipment and supply monitoring, ordering, and patient follow-up.

    • Assisting with result calls and limited triage.

    • Appropriately document information in the electronic health record.

    • Manually enter into electronic health record lab and medication orders that are given verbally and/or written by the provider.

    • Utilizing correct techniques and steady fine-motor skills, safely administer injections and/or draw labs under the direct supervision of the medical provider (if applicable).

    Community Practice MA Intermediate Level: With the direction and supervision of the MD:

    • Role will perform and/or assist with patient procedures.

    • Respond to triage calls from patients and determines appropriate next steps (ex. scheduling an emergency appointment for a patient based on phone screen).

    • Communicate patient results and address or triage questions.

    Community Practice MA Senior Level:

    • Act as a lead and subject matter expert for other MA's, Front Desk Staff, Physicians, etc.

    • Train other Community Medicine Medical Assistants.

    • Assist the Unit Supervisor and/or Practice Manager, with quality or process improvement initiatives to help streamline clinic operations.

    • Provide advice and guidance to other MA's regarding office practices and operating procedures.

    • Assist the Unit Supervisor and/or Practice Manager with workload management to ensure each Physician is effectively supported and able to operate at the top of their scope.

    • Will act as a back-up scheduler if Unit Supervisor is not available.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Under the direction and supervision of a provider or nurse, assists with performing patient care

    • Maintains competencies in accordance with policy, procedure, and state regulations

    • Collaborates with the healthcare team in planning for patient care across the continuum, utilizing clinical pathways, algorithms, and other resources as appropriate

    • Demonstrates diplomacy and sound judgement in all interactions

    • Implements patient care in a safe and cost effective manner, involving parents/significant others in plans or care/goals

    • Documents patient care in EMR and effectively communicates patient information to healthcare team

    • Utilizes critical thinking through prioritizing and managing complex patient care

    • Delegates tasks appropriately while maintaining accountability for outcomes

    • Communicates with patient or significant other based on age and developmental status

    • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age appropriate care by identifying physical, psychosocial and developmental needs and adapting interventions accordingly

    • Provides information/instructions at a level of understanding appropriate to the comprehension level of the patient and/or significant other

    • Maintains equipment and medical supplies, including reordering, stocking, cleaning, and troubleshooting

    • Assists physician with materials, instruments, and equipment during exams and procedures; performs tasks by using approaches and equipment appropriate to the patient's age/size

    • Monitors and communicates changes in patient condition

    • Collects specimens and appropriately labels and prepares specimens for pick-up

    • Completes paperwork for lab tests, x-rays, and referrals

    • Prepares treatment rooms as well as sterilizes and cleans instruments according to AAMI guidelines and strict infection control regulations/policies

    • Evaluates environmental safety and provides safe environment with colleagues and patients based on patient age/developmental status

    • Performs administrative or clerical duties as assigned, including but not limited to filing, reception, scheduling, data entry, and patient registration

    • Participates in continuous improvement activities, staff meetings, patient care conferences, committees and projects

    • Attends inservice programs and staff meetings

    • Performs additional duties as required

    Salary and Benefits:

    The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $35,652 to $45,420.

    This position is eligible for overtime compensation.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Entry Appointment:

    • A High School Diploma or GED.

    Intermediate Appointment:

    • A High School Diploma or GED.

    • One (1) year of experience working as a medical assistant.

    Senior Appointment:

    • A High School Diploma or GED.

    • Two (2) years of experience working as a medical assistant.

    Conditions of Employment (Intermediate through Unit Supervisor Level):

    • Must be willing and able to obtain a valid and current Medical Assistant or Certified Nursing Certification within 90 days of hire. Substitution: Relevant experience and/or higher earned degrees may substitute for the certification on a year-for-year basis.

    Preferred Qualifications (All Levels):

    • A valid and current Medical Assistant or Certified Nursing Certification.

    • Experience scheduling patients for appointments using electronic software.

    • Experience taking blood pressure and pulse and performing blood draws.

    • Experience setting up sterile and non-sterile procedure trays and medical procedure rooms.

    • Experience and knowledge with medical chart preparation and set-up.

    • Experience completing lab forms.

    • Bilingual, Spanish preferred.

    Competencies/Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • Ability to keep a sense of calm, control, with ability to time manage while multi-tasking is vital.

    • Excellent communications, customer service and interpersonal skills.

    • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and work independently with minimal supervision.

    • The successful candidate will be detail oriented, self-motivated, a fast learner and possess excellent time management, and organizational skills.

    • Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology.

    • Effectively multitask and follow up timely and accurately on tasks, including outstanding labs, patient phone calls, documenting patient information, sterile processing procedures, etc.

    • Retain verbal directions given by the medical providers to safely assist during exams and in-office procedures.

    • Identify and differentiate obstetrics and gynecologic instruments and be able to hand to the provider safely and with sterile technique upon request.

    • Manage emotions and reactions with patients, providers, and peers.

    • Communicate effectively and efficiently in verbal and written forms with a variety of audiences, including patients, providers, and staff
